How much salary to ask for in Egypt: turn the net you need into gross

To take home EGP 20,000 a month, ask for about EGP 26,000 gross. Type the amount you need, and this works back through salary tax and social insurance to the figure to say in the interview.

The exact gross for EGP 20,000 is EGP 25,536.25. We round up to the next EGP 500, because a round figure is easier to say out loud and it can't leave you short. At EGP 26,000 you'd keep EGP 20,359.27 after EGP 3,790.73 salary tax, EGP 1,837 social insurance and EGP 13 for the Martyrs fund.

What gross should I ask for?

These are rounded up to the next EGP 500, for a full month in a private sector job.

  • To keep EGP 10,000: ask for EGP 12,500, which leaves EGP 10,081.25
  • To keep EGP 15,000: ask for EGP 19,500, which leaves EGP 15,308.25
  • To keep EGP 20,000: ask for EGP 26,000, which leaves EGP 20,359.27

Is this what the job is worth?

No. This tool converts your own number. It doesn't tell you what a job pays, and we won't guess. Only 58 of our 2,320 adverts on 1 November 2026 state any pay at all, and 55 of those come from one employer, so there's no honest typical salary to show. Start from your real costs: rent, transport, family, savings. If you've got a friend in the same kind of job, ask what reaches their account.

The law sets a floor. The private sector minimum is EGP 7,000 a month, which takes home about EGP 6,103.50. See the minimum wage page if an offer comes close to that.

Someone offered me a net figure. How do I compare it?

Type it in here. Adverts in Egypt use both, so you can't assume. In our catalogue, one call centre employer advertises EGP 33,000 net for French speakers. To keep that from a gross offer, you need about EGP 42,504.08 gross, which is about EGP 9,500 more than the number looks.

If a figure says up to, or says it includes KPIs, ask for the fixed part in writing and put that in the calculator as well. Plan your rent on the fixed part.

Why might a higher figure leave me with less?

Around EGP 53,500 gross, tax jumps. EGP 53,510 leaves EGP 40,915.61, which is EGP 325.85 less than EGP 53,500 does, because your annual net income passes EGP 600,000 and you lose the tax-free band. You need about EGP 53,950 to get back above it. Similar jumps happen at about EGP 61,840, EGP 70,180, EGP 78,510 and EGP 103,510 gross. If you're asking near these, aim above the jump, not just over it.

Questions people ask

Should I say gross or net in the interview?

Say which one you mean, every time. Some adverts here say net, and many don't say either way. If the answer isn't clear, ask: is that before or after tax and insurance?

Does the gross include allowances?

This tool treats the gross as all taxable pay. A cash allowance is taxed, so include it. A staff bus or medical cover isn't cash, so compare those with the offer tool.

What if my payslip shows comprehensive health insurance?

Tick that box on the take-home calculator. It adds 1% of your pay as your share. This tool leaves it out, so in a governorate under the system, ask for a little more.
